An Air-dried Toothbrush Is A Healthy Toothbrush, La Mesa

Posted in Dental Health on April 19th, 2013 by Jeff Gray DDS

Your La Mesa Cosmetic Dentist & Toothbrushing Tips

Today in our La Mesa dental blog we will highlight some of the simple things you can do with your toothbrush to keep your mouth as clean and healthy as possible.

One of the most important habits San Diego residents can form is to always allow their toothbrush to completely air dry between uses. The best way to let the toothbrush air dry is by placing it in a toothbrush holder on the counter with the bristles pointing up. This method of storage is much better than sticking it away in a drawer since it’s unlikely to dry there.

Also, when you travel away from the La Mesa or San Diego area, make sure your toothbrush is dry before you seal it away in a travel container.

A good strategy for La Mesa residents to make sure their toothbrush has ample time to dry is to buy two toothbrushes at your local drugstore. Then alternate between the two so each has time to fully dry out between uses.

And San Diego dental patients should remember to replace their toothbrush (or toothbrushes) every 3-4 months, or after they’ve had a cold!

Hi. I’m Dr. Jeff Gray, a general and cosmetic dentist in La Mesa, and I want my patients to have the best oral health possible. At Jeff Gray DDS we offer the following services:

sedation dentistry
cosmetic dentistry
Invisalign
dental implants

We are currently accepting new San Diego patients and the friendly and professional staff here would be happy to answer any questions you have about teeth whitening, veneers, bonding, or other cosmetic dentistry procedures.

Brush Up On Your Cavity Basics, San Diego

Posted in Dental Health, General Dentistry on March 8th, 2013 by Jeff Gray DDS

Laser Dentistry Finds Cavities For San Diego Patients

Residents of San Diego and La Mesa use the word ‘cavity’ often when discussing oral health practices. Along with teeth whitening and other cosmetic dentistry procedures, cavities are a hot topic.

At Jeff Gray DDS we think it’s great that people in the San Diego area are so conscious of their teeth, and we feel that having a greater understanding of exactly what a cavity is will help them take better care of their pearly whites.

Cavities can also be called caries or tooth decay. When a tooth is permanently damaged in the hard surface, tiny openings occur. These little holes are cavities. Different factors that contribute to tooth decay are:

Frequent eating
Consuming sugary beverages
Oral bacteria
Insufficient tooth brushing and flossing

Cavities may get so bad that you will see pits or holes in your teeth, but symptoms may be more subtle, such as sensitivity, pain when biting, or a toothache. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should call your La Mesa, or San Diego cosmetic dentist today for an appointment.

If you are in the market for quality dental care in the La Mesa area, give Jeff Gray DDS a call. We have been treating dental patients in and around San Diego since 1986. We can also answer any questions you have about cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers and dental implants.

We hope to hear from you soon!

The Jeff Gray DDS Guide To Dry Mouth

Posted in Dental Health, General Dentistry on January 18th, 2013 by Jeff Gray DDS

Fresh Breath In La Mesa

Many folks in our La Mesa community experience dry mouth occasionally. Some develop dry mouth in social situations or when they are under a lot of stress. Sporadic or infrequent dry mouth is usually not a problem. Constant dry mouth, or xerostomia, is not only irritating, it can lead to severe health problems.

La Mesa area people should not take their saliva for granted. Your saliva plays a very important role in maintaining your health. One of its roles is to help digest your food. The moment food enters your mouth, saliva starts breaking it down so your body can metabolize it. If you don’t produce enough saliva to perform this task your body may not be getting important nutrients needed to stay healthy.

Saliva also functions as a disinfectant by cleansing the mouth of leftover food, bacteria, and fungi.
This helps prevent tooth decay, bad breath and infections. Many La Mesa residents don’t realize that many of the foods we eat are very acidic and our saliva helps counteract those acids in our mouths.

I am Dr. Jeff Gray and my staff and I at Jeff Gray DDS have been treating xerostomia since 1986. I recommend cutting back on caffeine in such drinks as cola, coffee, and tea. Not only do these beverages stain and discolor your teeth, the caffeine can contribute to dry mouth. I also recommend drinking water throughout the day to make sure you are adequately hydrated.

Tobacco and alcohol can also contribute to dry mouth. Consult your San Diego physician if you are taking medication that is causing your dry mouth.

Dry mouth is not a natural part of aging, so call Jeff Gray DDS today and schedule an appointment if your dry mouth is getting worse as you grow older.

Help Me San Diego; I’m Afraid Of The Dentist!

Posted in Dental Health, Sedation Dentistry on November 23rd, 2012 by Jeff Gray DDS

Sedation Dentistry San Diego If you are afraid of your San Diego cosmetic dentist, you are not alone. At Jeff Gray DDS, we encounter many nervous first-time San Diego dental patients. How do we calm their fears, provide a comfortable dental environment and earn lifelong clients?

1) We carefully explain the findings of the initial dental examination and thoroughly outline any recommended procedures. The consultation also includes a discussion about pain control including oral conscious sedation dentistry medications. This allows our San Diego dentistry clients to make informed decisions about their oral health and necessary dental procedures.

2) Dr. Jeff Gray practices gentle, pain-free dentistry. San Diego cosmetic dentistry treatment will not begin until you are numb. Keep in mind, however, that every dentistry patient reacts to numbing agents and sedation medications differently.

Speak up quickly if you start to feel discomfort. We will pause treatment, administer additional analgesic and wait until it takes effect. At Jeff Gray DDS, we never rush cosmetic dental or restorative procedures.

We will do our best to make you comfortable, whether you are receiving dental veneers, undergoing crown-lengthening treatment, having your teeth whitened, or replacing your old silver fillings.

3) We provide many in-office amenities at Jeff Gray DDS which help our dental patients focus on something pleasant during cosmetic dental treatment. Not every San Diego dental patient chooses sedation dentistry. Sometimes chemical-free diversions such as listening to your favorite music provide a diversion while letting you remain clear-headed.

At Jeff Gray DDS, we understand dental anxiety and will help you overcome it. We are located at 8555 Fletcher Pkwy, Ste 102 in La Mesa, 91942.

To schedule a friendly consultation, call (619) 337-7700 or visit http://www.SmileSanDiego.com.

Tooth Knocked Out? Call Us ASAP!

Posted in Cosmetic Dentistry, Dental Health on October 19th, 2012 by Jeff Gray DDS

Cosmetic Dentistry San Diego

It may sound like a catastrophe to many San Diego area dental patients, but having a tooth knocked out doesn’t always mean you’ll need cosmetic dentistry to fix your smile. If you can keep a cool head and remember a few simple instructions, chances are your tooth can be salvaged.

The most important things for San Diego residents to do if they’ve had a tooth knocked out is to find the tooth, handle it carefully and keep it in the best condition possible so their San Diego area dentist can reinsert it properly.

Do not handle the tooth by the root, be careful to only touch the crown. It’s okay to gently rinse the tooth in water, but don’t scrub it or remove any tissue fragments from the tooth.

If it is possible, the best place for the tooth to be held is back in the socket (placed there gently, of course). Holding the tooth between the lip and gum or under the tongue is good too, just be careful not to swallow. If neither of these is an option, place the tooth in a cup of milk.

Next, you’ll want to get to your San Diego area dentist as soon as possible. Most teeth that can be reinserted by a dentist within an hour can be saved.

I’m Dr. Jeff Gray a general and cosmetic dentist in San Diego. If you are looking for quality dental care in the San Diego area, I hope you’ll give us a call at (619) 337-7700. We offer sedation dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, Invisalign, complete smile makeovers, and dental implants.

Call us at (619) 337-7700 immediately if you have a dental problem such as the one discussed above.

Dental Sealants – Another Tool For Cavity Prevention In San Diego

Posted in Dental Health, General Dentistry on October 5th, 2012 by Jeff Gray DDS

Cosmetic Dentist San Diego

Dental patients in San Diego and the surrounding areas know that regular brushing and flossing are essential for optimal oral health. However, the bristles of your toothbrush can’t reach into every small groove and depression in your teeth, especially the really bumpy back teeth. That’s where sealants can be invaluable.

Dental sealants are a plastic material that is applied by your San Diego cosmetic dentist. This material is a resin that bonds to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, mainly in the pits and fissures. The plastic acts as a shield against acids and plaque so that the tooth enamel is protected.

Many San Diego residents might think that sealants are only for children and teenagers, but they can actually be beneficial for adults as well. If you are wondering if sealants are right for you, speak with your San Diego dentist. This simple dental procedure can dramatically improve your oral health by protecting the surfaces that are particularly vulnerable to decay.

Many dental insurance providers include dental sealants as a covered benefit, so check with your provider if you are considering them. If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about financing options. Because they can prevent cavities, dental sealants can save you money in the long run.

I’m Dr. Jeff Gray, a San Diego dentist and I want to thank you for visiting my dental blog. At our office we serve the San Diego area by offering:

  • sedation dentistry
  • cosmetic dentistry
  • Invisalign
  • dental implants
  • porcelain veneers
  • If you have any questions about these or other cosmetic and laser dentistry procedures or would like to schedule an appointment, call us today at (619) 337-7700.  Our friendly and professional staff would be happy to assist you.
