Cosmetic Dentistry - Laser Dentistry- Diaganodent
Although we still need x-rays to look between the teeth, a new laser dentistry technology was just released into the US that enables us to scan the tops of your teeth with a dental laser. Instead of using the traditional dental explorer (the pic), we can simply shine the laser over the top of your tooth and like a Geiger Counter, the laser reacts when decay is present. It actually sends an interesting alarm tone as the size of the cavity increases.
We are one of the first offices in the United States to have the new "Diagnodent Laser" available for your health and comfort. The Laser is 95% accurate (much more accurate then our previous technique) in finding small subsurface cavities that our traditional techniques might miss. " By catching the decay early we can get to it before it east a hole in your tooth." The dental laser goes hand and hand with our microprep unit, which can literally "spray away" the decay without having to get a shot, or having to use the drill.
It's almost unbelievable. Imagine simply scanning your tooth with the laser and being able to take care of the cavities without a shot or a drill and then placing a nearly invisible filling. Quite a change in dentistry from when most of us were kids!
The "Diagodent Laser" works by fluorescence. A healthy tooth reflects light differently that a tooth with decay. This reflection is picked up by the wand and the reading appears on the screen. The higher the reading, the bigger the cavity and the quicker it needs to be taken care of.
By catching cavities early and using our extremely conservative fillings, we can actually reduce the need for you to have a crown in the future. This is great news for the patients in our practice. Don't be surprised if we check your teeth next time you're in, using this amazing technology.
