What is the Recovery Time for a Dental Implant?

dental implant recovery time La Mesa

Once one of our patients at Jeff Gray DDS | Espire Dental in La Mesa decides to go ahead with a dental implant, one of the first things they want to know is: how long is the recovery time?

Our answer? Recovery is difficult to predict, because every case is different. There are various factors that go into the process, but not all of them apply to each case.

Some of the issues include:

  • Any failing teeth? In addition to the lost tooth the dental implant replaces, patients sometimes have unhealthy teeth that need to be removed before the implant goes ahead. That extends the entire process.
  • Bone grafting? If there has been significant bone recession, we’ll need to boost the patient’s bone mass. This is usually done with a graft, which promotes new bone growth.
  • Osseointegration. This is a big word that means, quite simply, the process of the implant post fusing with the bone. We usually allow for about two months, but sometimes it’s faster and sometimes slower. Once the post has fused, it is strong enough to support a replacement tooth.

These are the main variables. It may sound like a lot, and sometimes it is. But it’s worth it! A new dental implant looks and functions like a natural tooth, restoring not only your smile, but your ability to bite and chew.

At Jeff Gray DDS | Espire Dental in La Mesa dental implants can replace a single tooth, or support a full dental arch. People from San Diego, Alpine, El Cajon, and Santee are confident in our advanced dental care. Call us to schedule an appointment today!

Are Dental Implants Worth It?

Are La Mesa Dental Implants Worth It?

Dental implants have been hailed as one of the greatest advances in dentistry, but that doesn’t mean deciding to get one is easy. There is much to consider, but at Jeff Gray DDS | Espire Dental, we believe they are worth it.

One of the things that makes a lot of people think twice about implants is the cost. There’s no way around that; even the best dental insurance policies only cover implants up to a point.

It’s important to remember that implants are made the same materials used in surgeries like hip replacement. Bone grafting may be required, if the patient doesn’t have enough healthy bone mass.

Issues like that must be weighed against the purely pragmatic. Can you place a value on the ability to eat and chew food normally? Because they are physically attached to the jaw bone, dental implants function like natural teeth. That’s true whether it’s a single tooth replacement, or whether the implants are anchoring a dental arch.

And then there is your smile, of course. Teeth are one of the first things we notice about other people. No one wants to go around hiding their smile.

A full set of teeth is priceless, and with dental implants from Jeff Gray DDS | Espire Dental, you can have one. Patients from San Diego, Alpine, El Cajon, and Santee have benefitted from them, as well as from our general dentistry. Call for an appointment today!

Save Your Breath

bad breath treatments La Mesa

This post from Jeff Gray DDS Espire Dental in La Mesa focuses on a problem experienced by many people, bad breath.

Bad breath, or halitosis, has several causes. The most common is poor oral hygiene. Halitosis often happens in the middle of the day, due to an inability to brush between meals. Small food pieces on the teeth, gums, and tongue grow bacteria. This in turn creates a sulfur compound, which emits the unpleasant odor.

While poor oral hygiene is the most common cause, other circumstances can contribute to or worsen the problem. The best remedy is regular brushing and flossing, but other actions might also be needed.

For example, a salivary gland problem or certain medications can cause dry mouth. Saliva moistens the teeth and gums, clearing away odiferous dead cells. Saliva also neutralizes the ever-present acids on the tongue, gums, and cheeks. Limiting caffeine, chewing sugar-free gum, using over-the-counter saliva substitutes, and using a humidifier can add moisture to the mouth.

Remember, the best defense against bad breath is a good dental care routine – daily brushing and flossing, and regular visits to the dentist.

If you struggle with bad breath in spite of vigilant oral hygiene, talk to us at Jeff Gray DDS Espire Dental in La Mesa. People from San Diego, Alpine, El Cajon, and Santee come to us for complete general dentistry, and improve their smiles with our cosmetic dentistry. Schedule an appointment with us today!

Don’t Settle For An Unattractive Smile

Don’t Settle For An Unattractive Smile In La Mesa!

No one likes to settle for less than the best, especially with something as important as your smile. At Jeff Gray DDS Espire Dental in San Diego, we have cosmetic dentistry solutions for your smile.

Cosmetic dentistry refers to a group of procedures that, individually or collectively, create positive changes to your smile. One procedure, such as teeth whitening, will go along way toward upgrading your smile. Two or more gives you a complete smile makeover.

Cosmetic Procedures

The term “cosmetic dentistry” means different things to different dentists. One practice might call a dental implant cosmetic, while another will consider it restorative.

With that in mind, here are some of the more common cosmetic dentistry procedures:

  • Teeth whitening. Nothing you buy at the store can can compare to teeth whitening from a cosmetic dentist. The bleaching ingredients may be the same, but professional strength whitening far surpasses anything over-the-counter. You’ll get a dazzling new smile!
  • Porcelain veneers. Veneers are thin shells of medical-grade ceramic that are bonded to the front of your teeth. Made to match existing teeth, they can hide cracks, gaps, and other imperfections.
  • Crowns and Bridges. Dental crowns are used to repair damaged teeth by covering them like a cap. This restores them to their natural shape. A dental bridge fills the space left by a missing tooth.
  • Dental implants. Implants are state-of-the-art tooth replacement. Strictly speaking, it’s a titanium post inserted into the jaw to replace a missing tooth root. A replacement tooth is attached to the post. They look and function like natural teeth.

At Jeff Gray Espire Dental in San Diego we use cosmetic dentistry to complement the smiles of each patient. People from San Diego, Alpine, El Cajon, and Santee also come to us for our complete general dentistry. Schedule an appointment with us today!

Aesthetic Dental Transformations

Aesthetic Dental Transformations in La Mesa

More and more people are enjoying the lasting benefits of cosmetic dentistry, available at Jeff Gray DDS Espire Dental in La Mesa.

When you first look in the mirror in the morning while brushing those gleaming babies, you remember; “Oh yeah, I fixed my teeth and they look incredible!”

We have talked about different cosmetic dentistry procedures in previous blog articles, but let’s review the most common.

  • Teeth whitening is the one of the most popular and least invasive procedures. Sure, there are plenty of over-the-counter whitening products, but none can match the power of professional teeth whitening.
  • Porcelain veneers are glass-like, wafer-thin covers that adhere to teeth. They correct chips, stains and misaligned teeth that do not require orthodontia.
  • Dental crowns correct more extensive problems. They have many uses, such as the final restoration following a root canal or to restore teeth weakened by decay, injury, or gum disease.
  • Dental implants are state-of-the-art replacements for one or more missing teeth. A metal post is placed in the jaw, where it fuses with the bone to become a foundation for one or more replacement teeth.

At Jeff Gray DDS Espire Dental in La Mesa we’ve improved countless smiles with cosmetic dentistry. People from San Diego, Alpine, El Cajon, and Santee also come to us for complete general dentistry. Call for an appointment today!

Restoring Teeth At Jeff Gray DDS

Tooth Restoration in La Mesa

At  Jeff Gray DDS | Espire Dental in San Diego we use a variety of techniques to restore damaged teeth. These fall into the category of restorative dentistry, which we will describe in this blog post.

The most common restorative dentistry procedure is probably the traditional filling. Most people have at least one by the time they reach adulthood.  Traditional fillings are also called ‘direct restorations’ because they are applied to the tooth and then shaped and polished in one visit.

Another type of filling is called an ‘indirect restoration’ and is fabricated in a dental lab. There are two types: inlays and onlays.

Other restorative dentistry procedures:

  • Crowns. Sometimes called “caps,” crowns are a cover that fit over a tooth that has been repaired after damage or decay. The crown stdrengthens and protects it.
  • Bridges. A dental bridge supports one or several artificial teeth. The support is called a bridge because it “bridges” the gap caused by the missing teeth.
  • Dental implants. Implants are titanium posts inserted into the jaw. They can support one or more artificial teeth, and several can support a dental arch (denture).

These procedures are important because filling empty spaces in the mouth keeps remaining teeth from shifting in place, and also makes it easier to maintain goo dental health.

Whether the damage is caused by decay, injury, bite problems, or natural wear  Jeff Gray DDS | Espire Dental in San Diego will help you choose the best restorative dentistry option for your needs. Our patients come from San Diego, Alpine, El Cajon, and Santee for complete general dentistry. Schedule your next checkup today!

How Do Implant Dentures Work?

implant dentures La Mesa

Dental implants are an ideal tooth restoration. They can restore anywhere from one to all missing teeth. Dental implants are available at Jeff Gray DDS in La Mesa.

A dental implant is a titanium post that is inserted into the patient’s jaw. What makes implants so unique is that they actually fuse with the bone, to provide a solid support for one or more artificial teeth.

The implant acts as a replacement tooth root. Because of this, they help to prevent bone recession and, in turn, support the patient’s facial structure.

What Are Implant Dentures?

Implant-supported dentures are attached to the titanium posts. It takes from four to six to support a full dental arch.

The titanium posts are usually inserted into the front part of the patient’s mouth. That’s because there tends to be greater bone mass there. It’s essential to have enough healthy bone to support the post. Even if the patient doesn’t, though, bone grafting can promote new growth, enough to support the implant.

How Your Lifestyle Affects Your Tooth Color

teeth whitening La Mesa

Most of us would like to have white teeth and a great smile. But discolored or just plain yellow teeth is common, especially in a world of tea and coffee drinkers. At Jeff Gray DDS in La Mesa, we can fix that.

Tooth enamel is a little like skin. It has pores that can get clogged and discolored. The most common habits that work against you are:

  • Tobacco and other smokable substances
  • Sodas and other dark colored drinks, i.e. coffee, red wines, and teas
  • Not practicing daily oral hygiene
  • Not having proper dental care

If you want to lighten your teeth, the above will consistently work against you.

We advise kicking these habits to the curb if you want the whitest teeth possible. (There are other good health reasons, too.)

If, in spite of your best efforts, your smile is still dull, professional teeth whitening from Jeff Gray DDS in La Mesa can revive it. People throughout San Diego, Alpine, El Cajon, and Santee trust us with their smiles! We also offer complete restorative dentistry, and much more. Call today to find out what we can do for your smile!
