The Unsung Heroes Of Dentistry

forensic dentistry La Mesa

In today’s cosmetic dentistry post, we will veer a bit off the beaten path, so to speak, and discuss an important dental specialty; forensic dentistry. The official term for the use of dentistry in criminal cases and post mortem identification is forensic odontology. These experts are rarely recognized but play a crucial role in crime and disaster investigations.

Dental X-rays, dentures, and bite marks are all used to provide clues about the victim’s identity and/or the manner of death. A person’s teeth are as singular as fingerprints and can often sustain forces such as fire, explosions, submersion in water, and natural decay without being destroyed.

Identifying One Victim
Identifying a victim through general dentistry records is aided immensely when authorities have narrowed down a group of suspected victims to just a few people (or, ideally, just one) and can consult the dentists who had treated them. When the identity is totally unknown, a forensic dentist combs other databases such as those maintained by the armed forces and prisons.3

“Dental identifications are so much quicker and so much less expensive than DNA.” -Dr. Mark Bernstein, dentist and forensic dental consultant1

Identifying Hundreds of Victims
While identifying one victim of a homicide or accident can be more or less manageable, natural disasters, plane crashes, and other large-scale tragedies are exponentially more involved.

According to Dr. Jeffrey Burkes, chief forensic dental consultant for the 9/11 attacks, over 140 dentists labored to identify the fragments of remains that were recovered from the scene of the terrorist attacks. The identification effort was an extremely painstaking and complicated operation. First, the dentists were assigned to one of four teams. The Go Team gathered evidence from the scene, the Antemortem Team analyzed existing dental records of suspected victims, the Postmortem Team X-rayed the salvaged dental evidence, and the Comparison Team compared the digital X-rays of the remains of unidentified victims to the charts of missing people presumed to have been at the scene.2

“Dentistry fulfills one of its most important social, moral, and professional obligations by applying its unique knowledge and expertise to the task of identifying countless persons who are tragic victims of fires, catastrophes, disasters, and homicides.”

Teeth Look Too Short? Lengthen Them!

fix gummy smile La Mesa

Most La Mesa people who are considering cosmetic dentistry are aware of the cosmetic dental procedures that are frequently advertised in the San Diego area.

There are porcelain veneers: a custom made wafer-thin covering permanently attached to the front of a tooth to make it stain-free and perfectly shaped. Veneers can repair small chips and crack in teeth that are free of decay. Many Jeff Gray DDS – Sedation & Cosmetic Dentistry patients get minimally invasive veneers on their top six teeth for a dramatic improvement.

Orthodontia has received a lot of attention in California in the past twenty years with the introduction of short-term and invisible braces. And braces are not only for ‘tweens and teenagers. At Jeff Gray DDS – Sedation & Cosmetic Dentistry, we have seen more adults straighten their teeth to achieve stunning smiles with discrete orthodontic treatment.

Porcelain crowns have been around for generations but continue to restore decayed or damaged teeth while providing beauty, strength and natural function. Porcelain crowns are also used with innovative dental implants to restore missing teeth.

A cosmetic dental procedure that is lesser known in the La Mesa area is crown lengthening. If you feel that your teeth appear too short or that your smile exposes more gum than you would like (a ‘gummy smile’), you may be interested in crown lengthening.

Crown lengthening surgery is a safe and effective procedure that exposes more of the visible part of the tooth while minimizing the vertical length of exposed gum tissue.

When a gummy smile is corrected, our La Mesa crown lengthening patients are often surprised at how it positively affects their whole face. They love their new smile which reveals pleasing, symmetrical portions of their upper teeth that have been hidden under gum tissue their whole life.

Sometimes, crown lengthening is used when a tooth is fractured at the gumline. The surgery makes tooth structure accessible for the required restoration.

Digital imaging helps San Diego dental professionals perform crown lengthening with exactness. A highly-detailed, 3-D image of tooth and bone structure allows the cosmetic dentist to contour a gumline to the patient’s exact specifications.

If you would like to find out if crown lengthening is right for you, schedule a consultation by calling Jeff Gray DDS – Sedation & Cosmetic Dentistry at 619-717-8560. We are located at 8555 Fletcher Pkwy Ste 102 in La Mesa. We look forward to showing you photos of crown lengthening patients who are enjoying their new look.

Affordable One-Visit Tooth Fix

affordable fix for chipped tooth San Diego

Some San Diego people are unhappy with the way their teeth look but many mistakenly assume that cosmetic dentistry is far too costly to pursue.

Sure, a complete mouth reconstruction can be a steep investment. Consider the cost of dental school and post-graduate training for a master level cosmetic dentist. Consider the expense of individually creating multiple restorations at a high-tech dental lab. Consider the cost of setting up and maintaining a full-service dental practice or laboratory.

Before you give up on improving your smile, however, look at a less celebrated but extremely effective and economical cosmetic dental remedy: dental bonding.

Dental bonding has a wide range of applications for unattractive teeth. Bonding can fix a tooth that is damaged, chipped, short, or discolored. It can can also fix teeth that have gaps in between them.

How does the dental bonding procedure work?

First, your tooth will be slightly (but painlessly) roughed up to help the resin adhere. Your dentist will use a shade guide to identify the precise color of composite to match the existing teeth. Your dentist will apply liquid composite resin on the tooth, layer by layer. He or she will carefully shape and polish it before it hardens. The tooth is then covered with a conditioning liquid that helps with adhesion.

Once the resin is bonded, it is further molded to the precise shape for your bite and appearance. A laser helps speedily bond the resin in place as it hardens. Further shaping and polishing, if required, complete the procedure. The result is a beautiful smile.

Bonding is a simple and cost-effective method for perfecting your smile. Call today at to set up an appointment at 619-717-8560.

We invite you to meet the amazing team at Jeff Gray DDS in La Mesa. We are proud of our highly regarded reputation for vital personalized attention and first-rate care. Perfect Teeth With Veneers

porcelain veneers price San Diego

Today’s blog post focuses on an effective and versatile cosmetic dental procedure – porcelain veneers.

Veneers are individual covers for the front part of teeth. They are a terrific way to repair a myriad of tooth imperfections such as chips, stains, yellowing, unattractive shape or minimal misalignment.

Have you ever wanted a minimally-invasive facelift for a tooth without getting an entire crown? Veneers are your answer! Super-strong, tooth-colored porcelain laminate is shaped into thin shells and custom-fitted for each patient’s unique set of teeth.

How many veneers should you get? This depends on how many teeth you want to improve and the overall condition of your teeth. Dr. Gray will counsel you on the best strategy.

The thickness, color, alignment, and shape of your teeth impact the outcome as well as whether you have any gum recession. Veneers are matched to your existing teeth so they will blend seamlessly, but if you are planning to treat several teeth, you definitely want to have them created in the same “batch” at the lab.

The first step in the veneer process is to make a model of your teeth to work from. After that, a dental technician will use the model to create the veneers to the specific size, shape, color, and level of translucency. Experienced cosmetic dentists and dental technicians elevate the level of artistry in this painstaking process.

Many patients wonder if veneers are as heavy-duty as their natural teeth. Though the veneer tooth-prep process weakens the tooth slightly, with proper care, veneers can last up to 15 years. Porcelain veneers are more durable than dental bonding, which is sometimes used to repair the same types of imperfections. Dental bonding generally has a shorter life span than veneers, so keep this in mind when comparing the costs of the two procedures.

If you are looking for a dentist with an artistic eye for stunning porcelain veneers, give Jeff Gray DDS a call. My name is Dr. Jeff Gray and I have been serving La Mesa, California since 1986.

Sparkling Smiles At Jeff Gray DDS

affordable teeth whitening La Mesa

Welcome to the Jeff Gray DDS dental blog, La Mesa! I am Dr. Jeff Gray. Today’s post focuses on teeth whitening.

Unfortunately our teeth lose their luster as we grow older, but I see staining on young patients, as well. San Diego area residents of all ages want whiter teeth.

To protect from staining, it is critical to brush after meals to remove substances that can stain. After consuming acidic foods or drinks, however, it is better to rinse your mouth with water to dilute the acid. This will protect your enamel.

Tooth whitening products like kits, strips, whitening mouthwashes, and toothpastes can lighten stains slightly, but for a truly stunning smile, Jeff Gray DDS is your brilliant solution!

If you have existing dental work such as porcelain crowns, dental bonding, or veneers, the whitening process can be trickier, but not impossible. Teeth whitening will not lighten the stains on your restorations and your whitened natural teeth will make your dental work look even duller in comparison. At Jeff Gray DDS, we can upgrade your dull restorations including veneers, crowns or bondings.

In-office teeth whitening takes about an hour and bleaches teeth to a whiter-than-ever brilliance. Professional take-home whitening kits are also available at Jeff Gray DDS and can produce fantastic results over time.

Why Do La Mesa Dentists Like Potatoes?

Why Do La Mesa Dentists Like Potatoes?

The reason dentists like potatoes is because they are so “filling” ba-dum ching.

Lame joke, I know. But seriously, the wiser our patients in La Mesa are about what they eat, the easier it will be to care for their dear old teeth.

It doesn’t have to be potatoes, but the mouth does request that we take a good look at what can be damaging and upsetting.

The Sugar Problem
Sugars get converted by bacteria in the mouth to acids. It is the acids that begin to attack the enamel on the teeth and get the decay process started for La Mesa people of all ages. Fruits have high water content which can dilute the effects of the sugars they contain and get the saliva flowing so they aren’t really no-no’s. It’s the chocolate bars, hard candies, cookies, cakes and pies.

Acidic Food Coupling
Oranges, tomatoes, lemons and the like should be eaten as part of a meal to minimize the acidic effects. La Mesa folks are wise to eat a variety of healthy foods such as cheeses, chicken, other meats, nuts and milk. The calcium and phosphorus will support tooth remineralization.

Timing of Meals
The more often you eat the more often your teeth are subject to the decay process. This can be tempered by choosing healthy snacks. And keep in mind, the later at night you eat the more likely you are to not only eat unhealthy foods, but to skip oral hygiene altogether.

I hope this blog aids in keeping you on the path to a healthy mouth and gives you something to think about if you’re interested in oral health or a smile makeover in San Diego or La Mesa, California 91942.

“Don’t Take Stress Out On Your Teeth, La Mesa”

"Don't Take Stress Out On Your Teeth, La Mesa" Hello, I’m Dr. Jeff Gray. At my La Mesa practice I have noticed more and more of my patients with stress-related dental issues. La Mesa men and women may not think about it, but stress can do a number on your oral health.

Mouth sores, clenching and grinding, periodontal disease, and poor oral hygiene can all be exacerbated by stress.

La Mesa people who have difficulty managing stress need to realize that it can increase the risk of getting mouth sores such as cankers and cold sores. Most canker sores only last 7-10 days, but for relief from the irritation, we recommend our patients pick up an over-the-counter topical anesthetic at any Alpine, Jamul, or Santee drug store.

Clenching and grinding the teeth is common for stressed-out San Diego residents, and often it’s done unconsciously. Here at Jeff Gray DDS our friendly and professional staff can determine if a night guard or other dental appliance is appropriate to reduce grinding.

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is exacerbated by stress because stress can result in an increase in dental plaque.

And La Mesa dental patients may find that when they are under stress it is more common to neglect their oral hygiene habits. Many people in the Alpine, Jamul, and Santee areas find that they eat more sugary snacks when they’re under stress.

If you’re concerned about the effect stress can have on your teeth, schedule an appointment at Jeff Gray DDS today. We treat patients from age 25 to 85 and we offer Invisalign, porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, and laser dentistry. We hope to hear from you soon!
