Hiccups In Your Dental Routine

Alpine cosmetic dental veneers

The most common times people stop to brush their teeth are morning and night – either before or after breakfast, after dinner, or at bedtime. Common concerns that come with this routine involve hiccups in the schedule, from family life, shift work or exhaustion.

Sometimes after dinner isn’t super cut and dried. Many San Diego families face irregular weeknight routines. As the school year progresses, some have games to attend, band concerts, play practice, youth groups or other weeknight commitments. An irregular schedule often disrupts regular dental maintenance.

Many Santee workers have daily commutes or shift work to battle with. Due to the changing landscape of La Mesa’s job market and the greater variety in shift schedules we see patients who are adjusting to irregularities in sleep patterns. This leads to exhaustion and often sleep takes priority over consistent brushing – either morning or night.

The most important time to be sure to brush is after eating sugar or carb-intensive foods. These foods kickstart bacteria growth on the teeth without vigilant attention.

Highly acidic foods weaken the enamel, so it is best to swish with water immediately after consuming acidic foods to lessen the acid. Then brush about 30 minutes later when the mouth is less acidic. The fluoride in toothpaste helps remineralize the enamel.

Dr. Jeff Gray’s hygiene staff at Jeff Gray DDS – Sedation & Cosmetic Dentistry has been assisting California families since 1986 to prevent hiccups in their dental routines. See how we demonstrate professional and educated instruction at http://www.SmileSanDiego.com/.

Jeff Gray DDS – Sedation & Cosmetic Dentistry provides more than just cosmetic dentistry or sedation dentistry. In addition to teeth whitening, dentures, Invisalign, and laser dentistry there is hygiene education, teeth whitening and cleanings to be discussed. Sure, the cost of cosmetic dentistry, dental veneers, invisalign braces and dental bridges can all seem confusing. The key is to stay on top of the important habits that you can control. We can help you make sense of the other stuff.

Regular checkups are important for catching decay, infection or other troubles early so let us make an appointment for your next preventative visit and keep those hiccups from causing permanent damage. Call us at 619-717-8560  to schedule!

Teen Teeth: Adolescent Oral Health

 adolescent dental issues

If you are a teenager or the parent of a teenager, today’s Jeff Gray DDS – Sedation & Cosmetic Dentistry post is for you. Today’s post discusses dental issues of special concern to adolescents. Dental risks for La Mesa teens include both developmental and lifestyle-related factors.

At Jeff Gray DDS – Sedation & Cosmetic Dentistry, we see cavities and gum disease far too often in teens. Possible causes and complicating circumstances include insufficient dental hygiene, unhealthy diet, malocclusion (misaligned bite), smoking, hormonal changes, tooth grinding, mouth breathing, eating disorders, and side effects of medications.

As children become more independent, some get lax about brushing and flossing. Furthermore, some teens’ diets become worse when they have more freedom to choose what to eat. Few parents let their four year-old drink an energy drink, but they are consumed frequently by La Mesa teenagers – presumably without their parents’ knowledge.

Malocclusion can make proper brushing and flossing problematic, leaving even vigilant brushers with decay from food particles that are almost impossible to remove. Malocclusion can also trigger TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) issues. If you suspect that your teen’s bite is not aligned properly, or if your teen notices a clicking sound in the jaw joint, call Jeff Gray DDS – Sedation & Cosmetic Dentistry at 619-717-8560 to schedule a general dentistry exam.

In spite of numerous California public service campaigns aimed at preventing teen smoking, many adolescents take up the dangerous habit even before they graduate from high school. Smoking wrecks teeth as surely as it wrecks lungs.

La Mesa parents of teenagers are well aware that puberty has a significant impact on physical and emotional health. Puberty causes all sorts of changes in the body, and the mouth is no exception. Increased hormone levels (especially in females) can cause the body to react to a very small amount of plaque, triggering inflammation of gum tissue and increased risk of the more advanced form of gum disease known as periodontitis. Your dentist can guide you if more frequent professional cleanings are required to preserve gum health.

If you visit any soccer field or basketball court in California, you will see that many young athletes fail to protect their teeth. If your adolescent participates in a contact sport, communicate with us about custom athletic mouthguards.

One of the teen dental issues that impacts most young men and women is wisdom teeth. It’s best to start monitoring your teen’s wisdom teeth early so they can be treated before they lead to troubles with the jaw or surrounding teeth. And you certainly don’t want to send your high-school grad to an out-of-state college without addressing his or her third molars. If problems appear, your youth won’t be near their regular dentist, will probably miss class, and will either need to come home or use an out-of-network dentist or oral surgeon. If you don’t have a family dentist, Dr. Jeff Gray of Jeff Gray DDS – Sedation & Cosmetic Dentistry can examine your teen and evaluate X-rays to guide you on the best course of action for his or her wisdom teeth.

This article is by no means exhaustive on the vital subject of adolescent oral health. Future posts will discuss orthodontia, oral piercings, eating disorders, and abnormal teeth growth.

A New Reason To Eat More Fish In La Mesa

San Diego Cosmetic Dentist Hello La Mesa dental blog visitors, welcome to the Jeff Gray DDS blog. I am Dr. Jeff Gray.

I came across an interesting dental article on the Web MD Health News site the other day. The article is entitled ‘Fatty Fish, Nuts May Prevent Gum Disease.’ Author Jennifer Warner explains that a recent study links diets high in polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) with a lower risk of periodontitis.

Gum disease is a common dental issue for many La Mesa folks. When gum tissue pulls away from a tooth, it forms a pocket. (You know what they say about Nature abhorring a vacuum.) This pocket is a warm, moist place for bacteria to flourish. If periodontitis goes untreated, the tooth and jaw bone are at risk. During dental examinations, I carefully measure gumline pockets and examine all teeth for gum disease.

“Researchers found that people whose diets were rich in PUFAs were as much as 30 percent less likely to have gum disease than those who ate little or none of this type of fat.”

Foods high in PUFAs include salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, sardines, herring. Oils high in PUFAs include safflower oil, soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, and margarines made with the previously mentioned oils. Almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, pecans, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and flax seeds are high PUFA nuts/seeds.

I don’t know many families in La Mesa that regularly eat mackerel and herring. Maybe some of us could benefit from becoming more adventurous when it comes to seafood.

The possible prevention of gum disease is not the only reason to eat high PUFA foods. These foods pack a nutritional punch and have myriad health benefits. The next time you are stocking up at the San Diego Costco, you may want to add some salmon and walnuts to your list.

It is important to understand that diet alone will not treat or prevent gum disease, however it may be an additional tool for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

If you have not been to your La Mesa family dentist in a while, I urge you to schedule an examination and cleaning today. We are currently taking new La Mesa dental clients at Jeff Gray DDS.

If you are interested in teeth whitening, smile makeovers, tooth-colored fillings or invisible braces, call us today to schedule an appointment.

4 Super Tips For Strong Enamel In La Mesa

La Mesa Cosmetic Dentist

Did you know that enamel is the hardest substance in the body? It’s true! This substance, found on the outer surface of your teeth, truly should last a lifetime. But just because it’s super strong doesn’t mean you don’t have to work to take care of it.

Here are some helpful tips for keeping enamel healthy.

1. Pick the right foods for enamel health. It’s no secret that soft drinks hurt your teeth, and don’t think that diet sodas are harmless – the artificial sweeteners can also erode enamel over time. There are also other culinary culprits that can do a lot of harm. Sticky, chewy candies should be avoided. Chewing ice is a no-no. And don’t use your teeth as tools. Take a minute to grab some scissors before you rip open that package with your teeth.

On the flip side, foods with calcium can neutralize acid in your mouth as protect your teeth. So, enjoy your dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt!

2. Avoid vigorous brushing and use a soft brush. Also, it’s best to brush about an hour after eating, because foods, especially acidic ones, can soften the enamel, thus making it more prone to damage from brushing. If your teeth are discolored or yellowish, you may feel you need to brush harder. Instead, discuss teeth whitening with your dentist.

3. Keep stomach acids in check. If you have a problem with severe heartburn, the stomach acid could be traveling up your esophagus and into your mouth. This acid can erode enamel, so talk to your San Diego, La Mesa, or San Diego doctor about treatment.

4. Talk to your dentist about dry mouth and tooth grinding. Lack of saliva is a major problem for tooth enamel, and it’s no surprise that teeth grinding can also wear it down. Make sure your San Diego area dentist is aware if you experience either of these issues.

Lighten Up In San Diego

Lighten Up In La Mesa With Teeth Whitening Hello! Today’s dental article is for San Diego people with stained teeth. Do you think your teeth are too stained for teeth whitening to have any effect? Think again. At Jeff Gray DDS in La Mesa, we are whitening smiles for patients with both intrinsic and extrinsic stains.

Extrinsic stains are caused by dark colored foods and drinks, smoking, and normal aging. Jeff Gray DDS cosmetic dentistry patients with extrinsic stains achieve great results from both in-office and take-home teeth whitening systems.

Intrinsic stains form on the inside but can be seen from the outside. Tetracycline, excessive fluoride, trauma, and aging can cause intrinsic staining for unfortunate La Mesa dentistry patients. Though these stains are harder to remove, many San Diego patients with intrinsic staining can whiten their teeth with take-home whitening kits. The process often takes longer, but with persistence, intrinsic stains can be lightened.

In addition to teeth whitening, we provide a full menu of cosmetic dental procedures at our La Mesa office. With porcelain veneers, you can correct the shape of your teeth in addition to brightening the color. If you are missing a tooth, a dental implant may be the solution. Call (619) 717-8560 for a dental implant or smile design consultation.

If you are embarrassed by a less-than-sparkling smile, let the team of dental professionals at Jeff Gray DDS help you lighten up.

6 Ways To Improve Your Smile In San Diego

Cosmetic Dental Procedures To Improve Your Smile In San Diego

Who would say no to a prettier smile? I am guessing no one, and now with all of the amazing cosmetic dentistry procedures available from San Diego, La Mesa, and San Diego cosmetic dentists, most dental patients can get the smile they want. Here is a quick look at some of the most popular treatments.

1. Teeth whitening is the most common procedure and it is used to lighten discolored teeth. This quick and easy procedure is usually done in the dentist office, and the results can be surprisingly dramatic.

2. Bonding is a popular treatment that uses a dental composite that resembles enamel. This material is applied to the surface of the teeth, sculpted into the desired shape, and then hardened and polished.

3. Tooth reshaping is a simple way to improve the appearance of teeth. If involves removing part of the enamel and can be used to fix small chips or to change the length or position of teeth.

4. Veneers are custom-made porcelain coverings that are very thin. They are bonded to the teeth and can be used to close gaps or cover discolored teeth.

5. For most La Mesa, La Mesa, and San Diego patients, dental implants are the best way to fix a missing tooth.

6. And finally, there is the complete smile makeover. A smile makeover uses a combination of the available treatments to get San Diego dental patients the smiles they want.

When Style And Oral Health Collide in La Mesa

La Meas: Tongue Piercing Can Lead to Expensive Cosmetic Dentistry Needs

Oral piercing is a popular form of body-art in La Mesa, but just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s safe. I’m Dr. Jeff Gray, a cosmetic dentist serving the La Mesa, and San Diego areas. When my patients ask me about the safety of oral piercings, I make sure they understand the possible consequences.

First, San Diego residents should know that infection is always a major concern with any piercing, but because the mouth is the perfect environment for breeding bacteria, oral piercings are especially problematic. Chewing, swallowing, and speaking can also be impaired by an oral piercing.

Oral piercings can lead to an increase in saliva flow and, possibly, excessive drooling, something my La Mesa cosmetic dental patients generally want to avoid. (I don’t know anyone in La Mesa who thinks drooling is attractive.) Chipped or cracked teeth, damage to dental fillings, and metal sensitivity are other possible results.

Another serious risk associated with piercings that should concern La Mesa, and San Diego residents is nerve damage. Many people experience temporary numbness after a piercing, but for some, sensations never return. An injured nerve can also affect facial movements as well as your sense of taste.

Do you really want to risk looking like a stroke victim for the rest of your life?

If you’ve read through this and you’re still sure a tongue bar or lip piercing is for you, please consult your La Mesa area dentist so they can help you make the safest decision possible for your dental health. If you are looking for a dentist around San Diego, our friendly and professional staff here at Jeff Gray DDS would be happy to schedule an appointment for you. We offer cosmetic dentistry, Invisalign braces, dental implants, and more!

We may even convince you that safe, effective cosmetic dentistry such as teeth whitening, veneers, or bonding would be a smarter and safer way to express your personality and boost your confidence. Give us a call today!

Jeff Gray DDS Can Make Your Whites Whiter

Jeff Gray DDS Can Make Your Whites Whiter

Hi, I’m Dr. Jeff Gray, an experienced La Mesa general and cosmetic dentist serving the greater San Diego area. One of the most common requests I get from my dental patients is whiter teeth.

I am happy to say that La Mesa dental patients are in luck when it comes to teeth whitening in California, because cosmetic dentistry procedures like teeth whitening and veneers are safe, effective, and affordable.

Some La Mesa patients might be interested in bleaching their teeth at home. There are many affordable teeth whitening products available at San Diego, La Mesa, and San Diego drugstores. Remember that even though you are doing this procedure at home, you should discuss it with your La Mesa dentist and report any sensitivity that may occur.

At Jeff Gray DDS, we offer in-office teeth bleaching which can often be done in one visit. San Diego residents who do in-office bleaching usually appreciate the care that is given to protect the soft tissues of the mouth from the bleaching agent.

Any toothpaste that has an added polishing agent is considered a whitening toothpaste. For my patients, I always tell them to look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance when purchasing these.

As you can see, there are a lot of great ways to keep your teeth nice and white here in San Diego.

If you’re interested in any of these whitening methods or a complete smile makeover, call Jeff Gray DDS at 619-717-8560. Our friendly and professional staff will schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation at your convenience.

We hope to hear from you soon!
