What Does A Missing Tooth Say About You?

Talk To Dr. Gray About La Mesa Dental Implants When you meet someone in La Mesa who is missing a front tooth, what does that say to you? Do you wonder if they were in an accident? Do you automatically start making assumptions about their income, level of education and overall physical health?

Though it is extremely unfair, we are often judged (and misjudged) by our appearance. Even if a person is impeccably dressed and groomed, a missing front tooth detracts from the overall pleasing impression.

Here is a personal story from a woman who lost a tooth:

I lost my job and along with it my dental insurance, then a month later, one of my front teeth. It has been very hard to find work…. and I know the missing tooth has cost me several jobs.”

A missing tooth can be a big deal.

Dental implants not only restore oral health, they restore self-confidence. Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. Studies have shown that after more than 20 years, the vast majority of dental implants placed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons continue to function at peak performance. If properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Dental implants are one of the cosmetic dentistry procedures we routinely perform at Jeff Gray DDS to help our San Diego area clients regain the beautiful smile they once had. Not all cosmetic dental procedures are as extreme as teeth implants. There are many minimally-invasive remedies for unattractive smiles.

Porcelain veneers instantly provide a perfect, gleaming tooth surface for La Mesa clients with broken or discolored teeth. Tooth whitening is a quick and affordable dentistry procedure that achieves dramatic results without requiring the removal of any tooth structure. Call Jeff Gray DDS at 619-717-8560 for more information about smile design and restorative dentistry.

La Mesa Dental Patients Want A Choice In Dental Fillings

Tooth Colored Fillings For La Mesa Patients

With all the talk in San Diego of multi-procedure smile makeovers involving veneers, porcelain crowns, bridges, teeth whitening, dental implants, and invisible braces, sometimes the traditional dental filling is overlooked. If a cavity progresses no further than a filling, La Mesa cosmetic dental patients can avoid more extensive and invasive treatments. Today, let’s talk about dental fillings.

Most dental patients in the San Diego and La Mesa areas have a few fillings in their mouth. When a tooth has been damaged through decay, a dental filling is the most common way family dentists restore the tooth to its previous, intact condition.

Dental fillings have been used for over a hundred years, and they’ve come a long way from the silvery amalgam fillings many of us in La Mesa remember.

San Diego cosmetic dentists and dental labs have been working to formulate filling materials that are more cosmetically pleasing to their cosmetic dentistry patients.

Today, the filling material of choice in La Mesa and around the country is a composite of plastic resin with glass or quartz filler. Referred to as composite fillings, La Mesa dental patients love the fact that they can be matched to their natural tooth color, making them practically invisible. This is particularly important when the filling needs to be in a conspicuous part of the mouth, such as the front teeth.

Despite the popularity of tooth colored fillings, many San Diego dentists still find amalgam fillings appropriate in some cases. Dental amalgam is made from a metal alloy, which gives it the ability to hold strong even when the chewing load is great.

I’m Dr. Jeff Gray, a cosmetic La Mesa dentist and I work hard to make sure my clients enjoy their dental visits and love their smile. I’ve practiced dentistry since 1986, and I find it especially rewarding when La Mesa, and San Diego residents find renewed confidence after a smile makeover. So whether you are interested in replacing metal fillings with composites, or if you want to discuss tooth whitening and veneers, our staff would be happy to answer any questions you have.

Which Tooth Whitener Works Best in La Mesa?

Teeth Whitening La Mesa What is the best professional tooth whitening system to use in La Mesa?

There are two types of dentist-supervised tooth whitening systems available in La Mesa. In order to determine the best choice for your teeth, schedule, and budget, you need to understand the differences in the systems.

Both systems use a bleaching agent containing peroxide. La Mesa dentists who offer professional in-office tooth bleaching use a whitening gel with a high concentration of peroxide. Some La Mesa in-office tooth whitening systems use a light that causes the tooth bleaching agent to work faster. There are different types of lights including halogen, plasma arc, metal halide and laser; but they all work the same way. When the light is shined at teeth on which the whitening gel is applied, it causes the peroxide to break down into free radicals, which are active oxygen molecules. This process naturally occurs without the light, but the light makes it happen faster. That is why you can get whiter teeth in just one hour with Zoom whitening.

Most La Mesa cosmetic dentists also offer take home tooth whitening systems. Although these procedures take a bit longer to work, they achieve the same dramatic results. For many La Mesa area clients, this is the most affordable teeth whitening system.

At Jeff Gray DDS, we offer safe and effective teeth bleaching. Our La Mesa cosmetic dentistry patients can’t believe how great their teeth look when they remove the stains and restore the brightness. If you would like to learn why our system is superior, schedule a consultation by calling our cosmetic dentistry office at 619-717-8560.

Remake Your La Mesa Smile With Bonding And Shaping

Remake Your La Mesa Smile With Bonding And Shaping

Hello La Mesa friends of Jeff Gray DDS! When you think about getting into shape, your teeth are probably not the first body parts that come to mind. But your La Mesa cosmetic dentist may be able to improve your smile with bonding and enamel shaping, and you won’t even have to join a local gym!

I’m Dr. Jeff Gray, an experienced La Mesa cosmetic and general dentist, and today on my dental blog I want to explain a little more about these relatively conservative cosmetic dentistry procedures that can improve your smile without major remodeling.

Dental bonding is a great way to improve the appearance of teeth that are cracked, stained, broken, chipped, or have large spaces between them. When teeth are bonded, your La Mesa dentist applies tooth-colored materials, and “bonds” them to the tooth surface.

Usually used in conjunction with bonding, enamel shaping is the process of modifying teeth by contouring or removing enamel. Something my patients love about enamel shaping is that it’s quick, painless, and the often dramatic results are immediate.

If you are looking for quality, affordable La Mesa dental care, give us a call at 619-717-8560. Our friendly and professional dental team would be happy to answer any questions you have about any of our cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers and tooth whitening. We would love to explain the latest advances in Invisalign, dental implants, and porcelain veneers and let you see our gallery of before and after photos of smile makeovers.

If it has been a while since you have treated your teeth to a deep cleaning, call today to book an appointment with the most gentle yet thorough dental hygienists in La Mesa!

Bright Smiles In La Mesa

Bright Smiles In Alpine

Hello La Mesa! Do you want brighter, whiter teeth? Most La Mesa folks notice their teeth dulling as the years go by, but some foods, drinks, and even mouthwashes can stain teeth at any age.

OTC tooth whitening products like kits, strips, or toothpastes may slightly lighten stains, but for a truly brilliant smile Dr. Jeff Gray can help!

If you have dental veneers, bonding, or bridges, teeth whitening bleach will not lighten the stains and your whitened natural teeth will make your dental work look even duller in comparison. At Jeff Gray DDS, we can recommend new cosmetic dentistry work, including veneers or bondings, if these have aged and discolored.

Remember, anything that can stain a white tee shirt can stain teeth.

Fortunately, brushing after meals can keep stains at bay, however with acidic foods or drinks, just rinse your mouth with water. Brushing right away can erode enamel, causing thinner teeth as we age.

La Mesa in-office Zoom teeth whitening takes about an hour and bleaches teeth to a whiter-than-ever brilliance. Professional take-home whitening kits are also available at Jeff Gray DDS and can produce the best results over time.

La Mesa Whiter Smiles

Whiter Teeth for Salt Lake City

Wishing for a whiter smile in La Mesa but not sure how to get it? New to tooth whitening lingo? At Jeff Gray DDS, we educate clients on the variety of affordable teeth whitening treatments; from whitening trays to teeth bleaching to Zoom whitening. We do smile whitening every day in La Mesa.

Almost every toothpaste claims to whiten teeth, but as we age our teeth gradually turn yellow or gray, despite all the whitening toothpastes we use regularly. Tooth enamel, while one of the hardest substances in the body, is porous. Over time, the food and drinks that comes in contact with our teeth cause staining and discoloration. You probably have already discovered that a toothbrush cannot clean these microscopic pores.

Carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide are the two main smile whitening ingredients. They can penetrate the outer layer of your teeth to remove the build-up, and help restore whitening to teeth. Call Jeff Gray DDS at 619-717-8560 to schedule an appointment and we will explain the difference between these tooth bleaching ingredients and how they may affect your La Mesa smile whitening results.

La Mesa at-home teeth whitening products are probably not a good choice if you have dental crowns or veneers. You could end up with extremely uneven results or possible damage to your existing cosmetic dentistry.

We know the best La Mesa teeth bleaching options and can recommend the perfect white smile solution for you.

At Jeff Gray DDS, we hope to see you soon. Give us a call at 619-717-8560.

What Is Laser Dentistry?

Affordable San Diego Tooth Whitening The word ‘LASER’ is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser device emits a powerful, highly-concentrated beam of light. (Didn’t we all love the amazing laser weapons in ‘Star Wars?) Lasers are used in hundreds of applications in almost every California industry including communications, researching, manufacturing, entertainment and medicine.

Lasers are now used in some technologically-advanced La Mesa dental practices on both hard (tooth) and soft (gum) tissue. Lasers allow La Mesa cosmetic dentists a degree of precision that was previously impossible.

How do lasers benefit our La Mesa dental patients?

  • Fewer stitches (some surgical procedures require no sutures)
  • Shorter healing time
  • Decreased chance of infection
  • Less damage to surrounding tissue/bone
  • Increased patient comfort – anesthesia is often unnecessary

La Mesa dentists use lasers in crown lengthening, decay detection, bacteria removal in root canals, gum recontouring, biopsy, lesion removal, and tooth whitening.

If you are interested in any of these procedures, call Jeff Gray DDS at 619-717-8560. Dr. Jeff Gray has been providing unsurpassed cosmetic and sedation dentistry since 1986.

The latest laser dentistry technology is useless without the skill and experience necessary to deliver the best possible outcomes. Let us show you some photos of the results we routinely achieve at Jeff Gray DDS in La Mesa.

Do Whitestrips Work?

Do Whitestrips Work in La Mesa? If you have visited the toothpaste aisle at your San Diego Wal-Mart, you have probably noticed dozens of products that claim to whiten your teeth. A few years ago, the only over-the-counter tooth whitening options in San Diego were whitening toothpastes and Crest Whitestrips. Now there is a wide variety of products at every drugstore counter in the San Diego area.

Whitening Rinses
San Diego whitening rinses are similar to mouthwashes. They kill bacteria, offer fresh breath and may help remove plaque. Whitening rinses, however, contain tooth-whitening ingredients not found in mouthwashes. Manufacturers advise taking a mouthful of the rinse and letting it slosh around on your teeth for one minute twice a day. Though this method is simple, many users never notice a lightening of their teeth. This is probably because the rinse does not touch your teeth long enough to truly whiten them.

Whitening Strips
The whitening strips you can buy in San Diego grocery stores have a couple of drawbacks. Though they contain a bleaching agent, it is much less potent than those used in San Diego dental offices. Another problem is that they do not whiten between teeth because the strips only touch the front surface. Though it is possible to remove stains, it can take months to see any whitening. By that point, you have probably spent more money than you would have if you’d have chosen the professional system at your San Diego laser tooth whitening dental clinic.

Teeth Whitening Gels
Whitening gels are painted onto teeth with a small brush. One problem with whitening gels is that they only stick to dry teeth. If any saliva gets on the teeth during treatment, the gel is more likely to slide off.

If you are serious about dramatically whitening your teeth, the safest, quickest, and most affordable system is at your San Diego cosmetic dental office.

Ouch! Are Your Teeth Sensitive In La Mesa?

Are Your Teeth Sensitive In La Mesa?

For those of you in the La Mesa area who feel pain when you sip your morning coffee or who cringe each time you brush or floss, Jeff Gray DDS is here for you.

Dr.  Jeff Gray has been treating this common problem since 1986.

The first line of defense against tooth sensitivity is proper oral hygiene. Incorrect brushing and over-brushing can result in receding gums, which leads to the exposure of microscopic tubules in the dentin. When these tubules are exposed, acidic, hot, cold, and sticky foods can then reach the nerve cells in the teeth causing discomfort.

Here in our La Mesa cosmetic dentistry practice, our knowledgeable staff can determine if your brushing style is contributing to your tooth sensitivity and get you on your way to proper oral care habits.

Jeff Gray usually recommends an over-the-counter desensitizing toothpaste that will alleviate tooth pain after several applications. Most San Diego Wal-Mart and San Diego Sav-On stores carry it. However, some La Mesa patients may need in-office procedures such as fluoride gel treatments available at Jeff Gray DDS.

Don’t worry if you have sensitive teeth in La Mesa and want to have your teeth whitened. Here at Jeff Gray DDS, Dr. Gray can determine which professional tooth whitening or at-home whitening procedures will work for you.

Call our La Mesa cosmetic dental office today to get relief from your sensitive teeth.  We also offer implant dentistry and cosmetic dentistry services.
